Abstract

Cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease and stroke , is now the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with most deaths resulting from coronary heart disease. The major risk factors for cardiovascular disease include dyslipidemia, hypertens ion, diabetes mellitus, cigarette smoking , postmenopausal status, and family history of premature coronary artery disease. Substantial data support aggressive risk factors management and prevention of cardiovascular disease. This article describes the epidemiology and management of cardiovascular risk factors in adults 40 years of age or older.

Methods. There was reviewed at random 100 files of patients 40 years of age or older at Centro de Salud Rómulo Roux of Pueblo Nuevo during April 2002, to obtain information about cardiovascular risk factors.

Results. A total of 80 patients with cardiovascular risk factors were identified; 44% were obese , 45% had hypertension, 46% with dyslipidemia, 21% had diabetes , 14% were current smokers, and 8% used alcohol. Only 23% of the patient's records documented recommendations about lifestyle changes.

Conclusions. Is urgent to take prevention of cardiovascular disease more seriously. In these instances , a counseling-based Iifestyle modification program should be implemented.
