Abstract

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a gram negative, intracellular obligated bacteria. Produces chronic infection with effect on endothelial cells, smooth muscle, macrophages and Iymphocytes creating a circle of reinfection in where the endothelial lesion appear to be the physiopatlologic basis of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. The purpose of our study was to determine the possible association between elevated IgA titers (?32)and the development of coronary artery disease. To determine if the variables sex, age and smoking were confounding factors. We made a retrospective not matched case control study with 140 patients, 70 cases and 70 controls. The cases were patients with coronary artery disease and the controls were chosen randomly from surgery and internal medicine floors. The patients with elevated titers have 2 .02 times more risk for developing coronary artery disease with 95% e l 1.3-3.36. Smoking, age and sex were not confounding factors.
