INTRODUCTION: The colorectal polyp is a tumor-like mass or circumscribed protuberance macroscopically visible in the mucosa, which protrudes into the light of the large intestine.
OBJECTIVE: To find the relationship between risk factors and the development of colonic polyps, in patients to whom colonoscopy was performed, in Consultorios Médicos Paitilla, by Dr. Jose Rogelio Méndez, 1997-2007.
METHODS: We analyzed1555 files of patients to whom colonoscopy was performed through Epi Info 3.4 previous recollection of data of interest such as age, sex, reason for colonoscopy, smoking, family history, previous history, number of polyps, location, size, histopathology, and degree of dysplasia. Risk factors like sex, previous history and smoking were stratifying by age. In addition,we did a logistic regression of all risk factors.
RESULTS: The distribution of patients according to age is mainly between 46 to 60 years. The main symptom used as indication for colonoscopy was: rectal bleeding (34,6%).55% of the patients with laboratory indication had fecal occult blood. 71,8% of the patients did not have previous history of colonic polyps. 20,3% referred to have family history of colonic polyps. The polyps according to their size were distributed mainly in the rank of 0 to 5mm (64,1%). Adjusting the variables to the existence of the other variables studied, we found that the following variables act as facilitating factors: masculine sex, more than 50 years of age, previous history of colonic polyps, where there were no significant differences between the crude OR and the adjusted OR.
CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between the evaluated risk factors and the development of colonic polyps in patients to whom colonoscopy was performed showed that the following are facilitating factors: masculine sex, more than 50 years of age, previous history of colonic polyps. Smoking and family history were not significant.
