Abstract

Introduction: The infections in the intensive care unit are an important cause of morbidmortality. These patients have a risk from five to ten times higher to acquire infections than a general hospital patients. It is describe by a measure of infections of 26,1%.

Objetive: To determine the frecuency of infections in the intensive care unit of the Rafael Hernandez Regional Hospital of David city, origin, location of the infection, isolated germen and antibiotic sensibility.

Methodology: We carry out a descriptive and prospective study where patients who entered to the intensive care unity between the 1st of April of 2000 to the 31 of March of 2001 were taken into account. It was suspected that these patients were infected and it was confirmed by cultures. It was excluded patients without evidence or suspicion of infection.

Results: 651 patients were hospitalized. From these, 25,9 % showed infection; 37,5 % were from communitary origin and 62,5 % were acquired within the hospital. The main isolated germens were Pseudomona aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter sp and negative coagulase Staphylococcus. The species of Pseudomona, Acinetobacter; Enterobacter and Klebsiella showed high resistance to the antibiotics.

Conclusions: The frecuency of infections in the Intensive Care Unit of our hospital is similar to those which have been published in the other centers; however, there is a high percentage of adquired infections within the hospital as well as a significant resistance to the available antibiotics.
