Introduction. Genital human Papilomavirus (HPV) infection is highly prevalent in sexually active young women; and it is proved that cervical cancer for a woman depends largely on the probability of being infected with some specific types of HPV. The objective of this study was to describe the following risk factors: numbers of Iifetime sexual partners, early age at pregnancy, multiparity, early age at first intercourse, frequent genital infections and smoking.
Methodology. A descriptive retrospective type study was realized, in which the universe consisted in all the women attended of the Emiliano Ponce Health Center with HPV infection confirmed by citologic test. They answer a questionnaire either by phone or personally.
Results. The universe was 143 cases, but only 45 obey to the inclusion criteria. 91.11 % of the cases had 2 or more sexual partners; 44.4% were 20-24 years old; from the total of pregnancies, 65.38% had some pregnancy during adolescence and 91.11 % had her first intercourse during adolescence.
Discussion. The highest rates of HPV were found in 24 or less year-old women and the more important risk factors were: 2 or more sexual partners and early age (adolescence) at first intercourse. According with the total of cases, multiparity and pregnancy at adolescence had lower rates; but from the total of women who had any pregnancy at all, this values were more significant.
