Duodenal Ulcer (DU) represent s the main upper digestive hemorrhage hospitalization reason. The ethiology of DU is multifactorial, nevertheless we know yet that the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the leading cause of it. The DU complications include hemorrhage, ruptures and obstructions with high morbidity and mortality rates.
Methodology: This is a retrospective descriptive study, whose universe is every patient admitted to the 9 & 10 large surgery rooms of the Santo Tomás Hospital (HST) since January 1995 to June 2000 with the DU diagnose.
Results: The study has a universe of 43 cases . 14% of them belong to the 31 - 40 age group. 91 % of them were males and the most frequent complication was the hemorrhage (74 %). Ten (23.2 %) patients had the H. pylori detection test documented and 90% (9) were positive for that test. 58% of the cases (25) had a positive history of smoking.
