Introduction: Among all types of hernia, inguinal hernias are the most common. The purpose of this study is to describe the general characteristics of inguinal hernias.
Methodology: This is a retrospective descriptive study. The clinical records of 151 patients were reviewed, between January 1998 until June 2000, chosen by a random stratified sample method. Seven teen patients were excluded, so a sample of 134 patients was used.
Results: Eighty two percent were males, 17.10 % females. Sixty two percent were over 51 years old. Sixteen percent of males and 83.3 % of females had an etiologic background. The most common: previous surgery, prostatism and previous pregnancy. Five percent had complications.
Conclusions: Most of the hernias were in males and over 51 years old. The most common etiologic backgrounds were previous surgery, prostatism and previous pregnancy. There were almost no complications.
