Nosocomial infection is a very expensive but it can be prevent. The surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most frecuent complications in the surgical service, with a 4.7 % incidence. Only those that we re not present or in incubation at the admission moment and those developed between the first 30 days after surgery are considered to be acquired in the hospital. A descriptive retrospective study was performed in the surgery rooms of the "Hospital Santo Tomás" to describe the factors associated with the infections of the surgical site. Most of the patients were less than 55 years old (88.3 %). A 37 % of the patients had a history of active tabaquism, 9 % had 3 or more concomitant diseases, 70 % had undergo urgent surgical procedures and 71% did not receive antibiotic before the procedure. An increase of SSI was observed according to the type of wound: clean, clean contaminated, contaminated, and infected in a 2, 23, 30 and 42 % respectively. Cases with a surgical time of 1-2 hours present the greater incidence of SSI (46.1%). followed by those with a surgical time of 2-3 hours (25%). The drainage was not used in a 75% of the cases.
