Major transformations experienced by today's society have repercussions far and wide, including that of a new vision of women's role in the community. The expansion of her roles embraces the right to a new, comprehensive, innovative model for medical care oriented to women and their needs throughout their entire life cycle, in the context of their having certain diseases more frequently than men, at times with different clinical presentations unique to women, in addition to their particular reaction to medication. We here in detail reasons justifying the creation and implementation of this new specialty Women's Health, considered from various points of view: that of women; the health team and the practice of medicine; and the community. The identifying characteristics are described for this new medical specialty, and we analyze the new genderbased curriculum proposed by the Panama University Faculty of Medicine.
