The Radium discovery by Marie Sklodowska in 1898 and subsequent medical application in cancer by Robert Abbe, in the last century, changes the spectrum of this disease, always considered incurable. Nuclear Medicine rises as a second speciality from radium therapy in 1951.
Panamenian radium therapy pioneer was the also father in this country of Radiology: Dr. Joaquín Vallarino, who performs the first treatment in Santo Tomas hospital in 1925. The physicians Rogelio Ávila Hurtado and Manuel Roy were the firsts panamenian radiologists with complete training in radium therapy and nuclear medicine.
Nuclear medicine began in the panamenian social security hospital in 1970, with physicians Pablo Fletcher and Jose B. Moreno as institutional sappers.
