Abstract

The objective of this transversal descriptive study is to determine the frequency of sickle cell trait in people between 15 and 49 years old in Portobelo, a town of Panama country, June 2004. The universe was formed by the reproductive-age people of Portobelo and the sample was of 271 persons, who were the ones that fulfill the incíusion criteria selected by conglomerates. Initially the samples were processed by the Sodium Dithionite Solubility Test, and then the insoluble samples were analyzed by electrophoresis wlth celluiose acetate. The studied variables were sex, age, hemoglobin HbAS, HbAA and HbSC. The 50,5% (137) of the population were females and 49,5% (134) were males. The largest age group was conformed by people between 15 and 21 years old. The sickle cell trait momentary prevalence was 11,1%, with 86,7% of AS carriers and 13,3% SC carriers. The sickle cell trait was presented in 60,0% of males and 40,0% of females. The distribution of sickle cell trait according to the age groups demonstrate a major frequency in the 15 to 21 years old group with 17,5% and around 8,0% for the rest of the groups. Our study was made in a community; this may be the reason of the difference between our results, which show a minor frequency, and the ones obtained before in Colon, which were made in public heallh centers.
