Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are frequent diseases that cause important morbidity and negative effects on the quality of life of patients suffering these diseases. The etiology of both diseases is complex, genetic and environmental factors contribute to their development. Genetic factors are very important for the genesis of these diseases, and it is assumed that at least ten susceptibility loci (PSORS 1-10) for psoriasis and one for psoriatic arthritis (PSORAS1) are associated with higher susceptibility. HLA-Cw*0602 is the gene that has the strongest association with psoriasis. It is associated with early onset of the disease, with higher probability of remission during pregnancy, with higher incidence of guttata psoriasis, with streptococci-induced psoriasis outbreaks, with Koebner’s phenomenon, and with more severe disease. HLA-B27, HLA- Cw2 and HLA-DRw52 are mainly associated with axial involvement in psoriatic arthritis, while HLA-B38 and HLA-B39 are associated with poliarthritis.
