Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Upper digestive bleeding is a frequent health problem worldwide and it’s considered a main cause of morbidity and mortality that affects all age groups. Nowadays physicians in Panama base this pathology according to worldwide risk factors. We do not have updated information about this topic in Panama. New studies are needed to establish the Panamanian factors associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The objective of this study is demonstrate the association between the variables and the upper gastrointestinal bleeding in hospitalized patients in the gastroenterology ward at Complejo Hospitalario Metropolitano Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid.

METHODS: We made a study about cases and not matched pair controls with a 1:1 proportion; sample of 154 patients, confidence level=90% and power=80. Cases and controls were treated in the Gastroenterology and Medicine room, respectively. Data collection was retrieved from patients’ files with a form developed by the investigators.

RESULTS: Results from upper digestive bleeding associated with patients over 59 years showed X2 =2,6 with OR of 0,589 (IC 0,31-1,12). Male patients showed X2 =1,7 with OR=1,5 IC(1,12-6,28). Use of glucocorticoids showed X2 =0,53 with an OR of 0,5838 (IC 0,1345 – 2,5332). Association to the consumption of oral anticoagulants showed X2 =1,02 with OR of 0,3246 (IC 0,033 – 3,1914). The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs showed X2 =5,14 with OR 2,65 for an interval of confidence of 1,12- 6,28. Tobacco smoking showed X2 =1,68 with OR 1,6238 (IC 0,7781 – 3,3888) and alcoholism showed X2 =0,03 with an OR of 0,9287 (IC 0,4369 – 1,9740).
