Psoriasis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease related to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and many other comorbidities. Many cytokines are elevated in psoriasis such as: tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-?), interferon gamma, interleukins 6, 8, 12, 17, 18, among others. An elevated concentration of TNF-? favors the development of metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. This occurs because TNF-? generates insulin resistance by interfering with its signal transduction pathway. Insulin resistance contributes to the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome by generating hyperglycemia and compensatory hyperinsulinemia which favor the development of obesity, hepatic steatosis, dyslipidemia and atherosclerotic disease.
