Objective: to describe the smoking habit in residents and interns of the Complejo Hospitalario Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid and their attitudes as health care promoters.
Methods : a descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. A questionnaire was applied to residents and interns of the Complejo Hospitalario Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid. The sample size was calculated with EpiInfo v.3.3.2, n=53. Out of 215 physicians, 122 were included through convenience sampling. The data was processed and analyzed with the same computer program.
Results: 59 % of the surveyed population was male, and 60,7 % were residents. 18 % of the population were active smokers, and 41,8% had a smokíng history. In the group of active smokers, 36.3 % began smoking before the age of 18 years. 33.3 % have smoked in their workplace and 9. 1 % do not warn ot the potential dangers of smoking to their patíents.
Conclusions: the percentage of active smokers in residents and interns of the Complejo Hospitalario Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid is smaller than the national prevalence; however, since this a group of the population in charge ot health promotion. and aware of the damage caused by tobacco, preventive actions should be implemented to eliminate this addiction.
