Abstract

Osteoporosis or porous bone is a disease characterized by a low bone density and a structural deterioration of the bone tissue, leading to a bone fragility that increases susceptibility to hip and spine fractures. This study evaluates the association among coffee, alcohol, smoking, chronic use of corticoids, menarchial age, years after the menopause and use of hormonal replacement therapy with the appearance of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women whose clinical files are found in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the Complejo Metropolitano Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid from january 2002 through april 2004 (122 cases and 122 controls, all postmenopausal women). This is a study in unmatched cases and controls by which the gathering of data was carried out by means of a close survey of an interview type via telephone. We found out the following variables: OR=2,4 for coffee ingesta and OR=3,5 for alcohol ingesta; both variable were statistically significant. In addition, we found out that the early menarchial variable as well as the hormonal replacement therapy variable are protective factores with an OR=0,3 and 0,4 respectively. On the other hand, we couldn't establish statistical significance in the smoking and use of chronic corticoids variables.
