INTRODUCTION. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory, not contagious skin disease characterized by cutaneous erythematous-scaly lesions that can appear in any part of the body, mainly in scalp, elbows and knees.
OBJETIVE. To determine risk factors associated with the development of psoriasis’s first episode in the Outpatient Department of Dermatology in the Complejo Hospitalario Metropolitano Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. A retrospective case and control study was made, in which the universe was the Outpatient Department of Dermatology of Complejo Hospitalario Metropolitano Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid. The selection of the sample was done by means of a systematized sampling; and our instrument of data compilation was an auto-administered questionnaire. The database was elaborated and analyzed using the program Epi Info 3.2.2.
RESULTS. The study relied on 100 cases and 100 controls, with average age of 50 and 41 years old, respectively. The first episode of psoriasis appeared more in 40-years-old minors, without predominance of sex. The skin ?s infections (39 %) and cold (32 %) were given in month before developing the disease. The family history (X2=16,6 p<0,05; OR=7,58) and smoking (X2=40,8 p<0,05; OR=17,38) showed significant association; where as the use of medications (X2=3,25 p=0,071), the consumption of alcohol (X2= 2,07 p=0,15) and stress (X2=1,18 p=0,278) do not reveal significant association.
CONCLUSIONS. Psoriasis appears mainly before 40 years of age, in both sexes. Smoking and having a family history with psoriasis are factors associated with the disease. We did not find relation with the stress and the consumption of alcoholic drinks.
