Abstract

Introduction. Malignant germ cell tumors of the ovary represent less than 10% of all ovarian tumors but not without significance since an early diagnosis can retain reproductive function of women by ensuring a good quality of life for the potential mothers to be.

Objectives: To determine the histological type, laterality, tumor stage, race, type of treatment received and location of household of patients diagnosed with malignant ovarian germ cell in the National Cancer Institute from January 1995 to July 2008.

Material and Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study. We descabed patient characteristics, tumor and the type of treatment received by all patients. Data were collected from medical records from the database of the Intituto Oncologico Nacional and medical files in cases where the information obtained from the database was insufficient.

Results: there were a total of 43 cases, whose average age was 22.9 years. Dysgerminoma was the histological type of tumor found most frequently.

Conclusion: malignant ovarian germ cell tumors diagnosed at the National Cancer Institute have similar characteristics to other studies. The most common type was tage I Unilateral Chemotherapy and surgery were the treatments of choice.
