PROFILE OF PATIENTS WITH HIP FRACTURE. EL VIGIA HOSPITAL. JANUARY TO AUGUST 2011.

Abstract

Objectives. To describe the profile of patients with hip fracture hospitalized in the orthopedics and traumatology ward in El Vigia Hospital.

Introduction. Hip fracture is the first cause of urgent hospitalization by the orthopedic service, causing an impact in different areas such as internal medicine, rehabilitation, psychiatry, social services, and sanitary-attention economy. These are the reasons why it is considered a public health problem, and it has been proven to mainly affect post-menopausal women and the elderly, having a vast association with osteoporosis.

Methodology. Descriptive study. We worked with the whole universe (N=47) of hip fracture patients from January to August 2011 in El Vigia Hospital. A survey was applied to the patient or a family member. EpiInfo 3.4.1 2007 was used to analyze data.

Results. We found that 96% of the patients were older than 50 years old, with a Women:Men ratio of 1.35. Intertrochanteric fractures were in the lead with 50%, and 79% of the patients received surgical treatment. 83% had some type of past medical history; and additionally, when admitted, 65% had hemoglobin <12mg/dL, 13% presented creatinine >1.5, 15% had hyponatremia, and 28% had hypo- or hyperkalemia. In-hospital complications were seen in 28% of the patients, and the in-hospital mortality was 8.5%.

Conclusion. Hip fracture has an important morbimortality in El Vigia Hospital, and it seems that the risk increases with age.
