Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial pneumonia occupies the first place of hospital infections and is a public health issue of international and national interest, in which the main research scenery has been the intensive care unit and this can explainthe lack of information of this pathology in the ward of Internal Medicine.

METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study was carried out in 2016, whose objective was to describe the general characteristics of patients with nosocomial pneumonia at the Arnulfo Arias Madrid Hospital Complex with the following variables: gender, age, comorbidities, condition of discharge, use of proton pump inhibitors or H2antagonistsand time of hospital stay.

RESULTS: In a universe of 30 patients, 17 males (56.7%) and 13 females (43.3%). 93% (n = 28) presented one or more chronic comorbidities such as hypertension, chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus with 63.3%, 53.3% and 53.3%, respectively. 10% (n = 3) died and the average length of stay was 16 days.

DISCUSSION: The main comorbidities found in the study coincide with those that have been reported inassociation with nosocomial pneumonia, as well as the length of hospital stay
