Abstract

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China and has now spread globally. Its pathophysiology, geographic distribution, and clinical characteristics are the object of continuous analysis. While there have been promising steps forward in understanding the disease, difficulties have arisen in gathering and synthesizing data due to the numerous and heterogeneous sources of information, as well as due to the dynamics of its epidemiologic curve.

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the current literature on the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to establish the consensus from available national and international publications, so that it serves as a reliable source of published evidence, both transparently and concisely.

DESIGN: Scientific articles publishedbetween December 2019 and April2020 were used, which were selected based on their relevance, validity, and content quality. They were obtained through the online libraries of scientific journals (such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, and the British Medical Journal), as well as from the information provided by the official websites of institutions recognized worldwide (such as the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and John Hopkins University).

CONCLUSION: Currentinformation on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is continually being renewed and is expected to continue to do so for the coming months. Staying updated is difficult, so we trust that this review will be useful for both students and different healthcare providers.
