CHIROPRACTIC, ACUPUNCTURE, NATUROPATHY : CONCEPTUAL APPROVAL AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS AND THEIR MEDICAL PROFESSORS. UNIVERSITY OF PANAMA. SEPTEMBER 2006.
Official governmental recognition is given to the use of a/ternative or comp/ementary medicine; of them, chiropractics, acupuncture and naturopathyare three of the moda/ities most wide/y recognized. The concept of them has evo/ved in a way that its approva/ might have changed between generations. A questionnaire was app/ied to two universes, one to a group ofmedica/ students and another to their medica/ professors. To assess the conceptua/approva/ ofeachmoda/ity, ana/gorithm was designed based on the score that depended on the answers given in the questionnaire. Of the group of students (N=63), 88.9% knew about chiropractics, 100% about acupuncture and 95.4% about naturopathy. Of them who knew about the specified moda/ity, 94.6%, 95.3% and 91.3% had a degree of approva/ greater than 1 respective/y. Among the group of medica/professors (N=9), 88.9% knew about chiropractics, 100% about acupuncture and naturopathy. Of them, 97.5%, 100% and 88.9% had a degree of approva/ greater than 1 respective/y. In general, the pattern of a greater know/edge and approva/ of acupuncture compared to chiropractics and naturopathy is consistent with the revised literature and our study.
