Introduction:the metabolic syndrome has a thundering impact on public health due to its morbidity and mortality.
Objective: determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a group of workers according to its actual definitions.
Materials and methods:the following descriptive transversal research is performed with a sample of 250 persons from both sexes taken from employees of the Hospital Ezequiel Abadía.After an informed consent, a data recollection format was made that included anthropometrics measures, pathological backgrounds and laboratory information.
Results: significative statistical differences were found in men and women on the prevalence of arterial hypertension (p<0,001), hypertriglycerides (p<0,001), and hyperglycemia (p<0,004). According to the International Diabetes Federation, the prevalence found is 39,2 %; whereas, with the Adult Treatment Panel III classification the prevalence lowers to 26,4 %. Nevertheless, according to the updated Adult Treatment Panel III definition, the prevalence rises up to40, 8 %.
Conclusions: there is a great variation in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome when different criteria are used. From there the urgent need of rationalize the great variety of created definitions.
