Purpose: To determine the relatioship between the use of oral contraceptives, breast feeding and physical activity, and the risk of developing breast cancer.
Methodology: A case/control, not matched, transversal analytical study was made. It included all attended women at the ION between January 2000 and April 2001 with a breast cancer diagnosis. The cases were the first 100 patients reached and the controls were personally interviewed in their homes.
Results: Women that use oral contracepti ves have twice the risk of developing breat cancer compared to those who don't (DR=2.14 IC 95%, 1.1 8- 3.90). Breast feeding reduces the risk by 61% (DR=0.39 IC 95% , 0.21-0.71), as well as physical activities (DR=0.24 IC 95%, 0.12-0.4 7).
Discussion: Our studies concluded very similarly to the reference studies we had, the risk fo developing breast cancer is increased by the use of oral contraceptives, nevertheless we found that in women who used oral contraceptives the late menarche provided protection against developing breast cancer (DR=0.89).
