Objective: To describe the abdominal wounds on patients treated at San Miguel Arcangel Hospital.
Methods: This is a retrospective, transversal descriptive study applied to all patients who were adm itted with a penetrating wound diagnosis between January 200 and May 2001 (N=66.) Wounds were classified according to the Abreviated Trauma Scale taken from the patient's file.
Results: The treatment rate at the hospital was 1.3 x 1000, a total of 2%. Most of the patients were hospitalized for less than 2 days, 89% of the cases were males between the ages of 20 and 24, 53 % caused by firearms, 39% by piercing/slashing weapons. The most affe cted organ was the small bowel , followed by the liver and colon, being trauma type 1 the most common and a mortality rate of 3%.
Conclusions: Most of the patients were males, wounded by firearms and piercing/slashing weapons. The most affected organ was the srnall intestine, with a low mortality rateo
