Abstract

This is a case of a 26-year-old patient of Asiatic origin, complaining of a sudden onset of flaccid weakness of upper and lower extremities and a general loss of reflexes, plus diminished potassium blood levels. During the physical examination, signs of hyperthyroidism were found, tests were made to confirm this and treatment was given. Hypokalemia disappeared with the initial treatment, as well as the other symptoms. These findings of hyperthyroidism, flaccid paralysis, and hypokalemia made us believe in a possible thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, infrequent and easily overlooked due to its low incidence and easily diagnosed by its clinical characteristics.
