The Phyllodes Tumor is a rare breast neoplasm (1%). Its usually a mobile, painless, fast growing lump, of 5 to 20 cm., benign (90%), more common around the 5th decade.
The definitive diagnosis is histopathologic; it’s a biphasic tumor of the lobular stroma, with nodules of stroma surrounded by epithelium. They can be confused with fibroadenomas.
This is the case of a 26 year old woman, who presented with an enlarged, painful left breast, tiredness, difficulty to remain standing, and no lymphadenopahties. There was family history cancer in other organs.
She was treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, a fine needle aspiration biopsy, and was referred to the Instituto Oncológico Nacional, where a core biopsy and nuclear bone scan were performed, revealing a non-metastatic phyllodes tumor. The patient had a simple mastectomy.
