An intense destruction of the immune system is paramount to the HIV infection. Understanding the mechanisms of immunologic damage, immunopathogenesis, is necessary in order to understand the extent and severity of HIV disease. Slow T CD4+ cell destruction is key in immune suppresion. There are also anomalies in each part of the immune system: CD8+ T cells, natural killer cells (NK), monocytes and B-cells. Therapeutic management focuses on immune system restoration while achieving viral suppresion. Will this be achieved by the combination of anti-retroviral drugs?
