Abstract

This study describes the characteristics of poisoning due to snake bites registered in the Luis "Chicho" Fabrega Hospital in the province of Veraguas, Panama.

We developed the investigation through an observational, descritiptive, and retrospective analysis. Our source of information was the clinic records of snake bites reported as urgent and processed under the statistics programs Epi info 7.0 v 2015.

From 2013 to 2017, a total register of 932 poisoning cases by snakes of which 505 (54%) ended in intoxications. Three out of these cases resulted in death. The snakes family Viperidae was responsible for the majority of intoxications.

The amount of poisoning cases by snakes at the Luis "Chicho" Fabrega Hospital is significantly high and represents a health concern for the people of the region.
