Herbaceous plants play an important role on the dynamics and regeneration of forests, hence, we have a better understanding of the structure of tropical communities and patterns of biodiversity throughout its study We seek knowing the diversity of herbaceous and subshrubs plants in the main path of the Cerro Chucanti Biological Reserve, located in the Serranía del Maje, in the limits of the province of Darién and the province of Panama. A survey was conducted along 7 km, covering 2 m on each side of the trail. We also studied the richness and diversity of species in 4 sites at two altitudinal levels, 800 m.s.n.m. and at 1200 m.s. In each site 4 plots of 5 m × 10 m were established. Once the plots had been established, the number of individuals per species was recorded in all of them. In total, 54 species of herbaceous plants and some sub-shrub species, belonging to 23 families and 41 genera, were surveyed. The richness of the species for the altitudinal levels is very similar, since 10 species were recorded at 800 m.s.n.m. and 12, at 1200 m.s. However, the composition of the species between altitudinal levels is very different, but the two of the 19 plots. The information provided in this study is a helpful guide to work on future management and conservation programs of this area.
