Abstract

The Fortuna Hydroelectric Project is located in the Fortuna Forestry Reserve, created in 1976. This is an Hydro – Project very important to Panama, because it has capacity to generate 300 MW (23 % of the national capacity). The forests of the Forestry Reserve are important to the Hydro – Project, because those protect the soils of the watershed against the erosion, keep the storage capacity of the dam, input water from horizontal precipitation and regulate the Chiriqui river discharge. The importance of these forests have been recognized from the beginning of the Hydro – Project, and the administration has made a lot of effort to management and conservation. The result has been a dam without sedimentation problem.
