Abstract

The Fortuna Hydroelectrical Project has a 300 MW generation capacity and represents the second largest in Panama, contributing with 20% of the electricity production. This project was conceived during the 1960’s when an energy crisis developed because of the increasing prices of the oil. Forty five years later, Panama is facing a similar situation. At the same time, rainfall-forest cover is rapidly declining in Panama limiting the possibility for their use in the next future. Because of both situations, the implementation of the Fortuna Hydroelectrical Project and the Fortuna Forest Reserve represent a step further in the development of the Republic of Panama.
