Abstract

We report 16 amphibian species representing 11 genera, 6 families, and 2 orders are found in La Tronosa Forestal Reserve in Los Santos province, Rep. of Panama. Based on UICN guidelines, the salamander Bolitoglossa lignicolor, the toad Bufo coccifer and the frog Smilisca sordida should be considered “endangered” (EP). As well, Dendrobates auratus appears in appendix II of CITES. In accordance with national priority ranges, we found that B. lignicolor and Cochranella granulosa have distributions assessed as rare. In addition, B. lignicolor, B. coccifer, C. granulosa and S. sordida are judged as endangered nationally, because of their rarity. We emphasize on the main factors which affect the biodiversity and the amphibians population due to the contamination of soil and water sources using agrochemicals with no controls; also the deforestation and wildfire, and as a result the fragmentation of habitats.
