Abstract

After the analysis of 21 research studies, 6 orders, 9 families, 18 genus and 45 species of brown algae were found for Panama’s Caribbean coast. Order Dictyotales was the most representative, reporting 6 genus and 25 species for Dictyotaceae family. The presence of 45 species (92 %) of the 49 reported for the area, demonstrates the great diversity of brown algae for the Caribbean of Panama. Within these, genus Dictyota, Padina, Sargassum are considered as a potential resource. Research works are concentrated in the area of Colon and Bocas del Toro, in addition to samples from Kuna Yala (San Blas), however, reports in the coasts of the Caribbean of the province of Veraguas are not known.
