Abstract

Due to the lack of published articles in Panama, studies regarding the anatomic disposition of the cystic artery should be initiated in order to get more insights in this matter. The general objective was to determinate the anatomic variants of the cystic artery in a group of Panamanian people. The selected group was 62 dead bodies used in the courses of Human Anatomy offered from 1998 to 2004. These specimens were carefully dissected and the found anatomic variants were described. The most important results were the following: in the 95.2% of the cases the cystic arteries were originated from the right hepatic artery; the origin of this artery was inside the hepatocystic triangle in the 80.6% of the cases; the trajectory of the artery was outside of the triangle in the 9.7% of the cases; the artery was originated as a unique artery in the 93.5% of the cases and in 79% of the cases the cystic artery had a diameter lesser than 2.5 mm. It is recommended to divulgate these results to the anatomy professors and to the surgeons of our country; in addition, also it is recommended continuing with this study with larger groups.
