During april 2002 to april 2003, biological water quality in the Santa Maria River was monitored at 13 sampling stations along 50 km of the mid-low section. Values for the biological water quality were calculated using the BMWP’ index. Physical & chemical parameters were also observed. Although parameters indicated stable conditions, biological water quality represents a limiting factor for the establishment and normal development of aquatic insect communities.
