Abstract

The existing phenomenon between cattle ranchers in the towns of Nuevo Tonosí and San Antonio, and big cats near Portobelo National Park was documented. The study determined that there is a problem between local ranchers and wild cats that had not been previously documented. Jaguars and pumas sometimes venture out to hunt domestic animals, and as in other countries, this is mainly a problem of ranch management. We recommend that in order to minimize this problem, or at least mitigate it, cattle ranchers need to work closely with local government and non-government institutions to promote activities such as: environmental education, improve cattle management, and to establish monitoring programs for “problem” cats.
