Abstract

This article begins by highlighting the relevance of environmental issues in the international and regional context, as well as the creation of regulations that establish actions to protect natural resources in the Northern Triangle. The objective is to analyze the environmental legal framework in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala in relation to environmental protection. The study employed an inductive qualitative methodology, using semi-structured interviews and an interview guide. These were applied to representatives of municipal environmental units, non-governmental organizations, and national and regional environmental specialists, resulting in a total of 14 interviews conducted during 2025. The findings revealed an alignment of state interventions with the environmental focus, which territorializes specialized laws by recognizing the role of local governments, which act through ordinances and environmental units. The implementation of community-based environmental awareness and education initiatives is also highlighted, including due process in cases of environmental violations. It is concluded that resources must be protected by all actors, joining efforts to conserve, preserve and restore the environment to reduce the impact of climate change, as well as to promote reforms or incorporation of more updated elements into the environmental legal framework.
