Abstract

This research highlights the objective of analyzing the decrease in container movement, due to failures in the technological system on the part of the administrators in the Port of Balboa in the different points on the port, type and size, to determine the ports that were affected by the stoppage in the Balboa port, also of the ports that were not affected during the stoppage. It was possible to analyze some factors that were affected during the stoppage in the port, and it was possible to determine the ports that were most affected. The methods that were applied in this research were the quantitative method and the cross-sectional method, in order to obtain information on the database called Maritime Port Statistics Bulletin. January-December 2013 and from that database to be able to recognize the variables that could be identified during the investigation, which were the traffic that I will refer to when disembarking and boarding, another variable was the type of how the containers were registered if full or empty. A greater number of full containers was registered with 1 365,111 compared to the empty ones obtained with 476,370. The ports that were most affected by the stoppage at the Balboa port were the ports of Bocas Fruit Co, followed by Panama Ports Cristóbal, and lastly Colon Container Terminal (CCT). As a conclusion, it was concluded that the Balboa port, because it was the basis of the problem that affected the other ports of the country, was registered as the port that obtained the highest container  movement, followed by Manzanillo International Terminal.
