Abstract

The essay presents a review on the use of genetic algorithms in the optimization of structures within civil engineering. Genetic algorithms, inspired by natural selection, have become a powerful tool for solving complex structural design problems with multiple constraints. Applications such as optimization of steel and reinforced concrete frames, reinforcement layout, and topology optimization are analyzed, highlighting how these techniques allow for greater design efficiency and a reduction in the use of materials. In addition, the combination of genetic algorithms with other optimization methods, such as the Nelder-Mead method, is addressed, which has been shown to improve computational efficiency and the quality of designs. The paper concludes with a reflection on the challenges and future perspectives in the application of these algorithms, including the use of artificial intelligence techniques to improve adaptability and efficiency in civil engineering problems.
