This article is based on the research titled “Evolution and Development of Architecture and Urban Planning in the Province of Veraguas.” This article focuses on the Governorship of Veraguas, from its beginnings to the present day, with an emphasis on the various governors who have held office throughout the territory’s history.
This unprecedented research provides, for the first time, information on all the governors and their history from 1508 to the present. Bibliographic sources from different periods have been reviewed, including books, documents in the General Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain, and letters from governors. Among these documents is the Capitulation of Burgos, the document that created the Governorship of Veragua and appointed its first governor, Diego de Nicuesa, whose biography is included. All of this research is accompanied by a historical overview of the site and its evolution, resulting in a descriptive table listing the chronological names of the various governors and the years in which they took office. This entire report is clearly documented so that it can be used for consultations and subsequent research, for the general public, and for institutional purposes at the national and international levels.
