Abstract

In the Panamanian economy it can be affirmed that there is a primacy of the service sector over other productive sectors, which is expressed in an important development of logistics services oriented to foreign trade, the solidity of its financial and banking system, among other relevant aspects and Among which Tourism stands out, this sector has a great weight in the Panamanian economy, in 2019 2.22 million tourists arrived in the country. This industry directly accounted for 5% of GDP, and up to 15% indirectly through restaurants and businesses in 2019.

This article seeks to know how inflation in Panama impacts the spending of international tourists? Since there are no studies at the national level that measure this relationship, economic theory and econometric analysis are applied, a more than descriptive approach to the central problems of tourism in Panama.

The study shows that there is an inverse relationship between the Expenditure of International Tourists (GTI) and inflation, a situation that is not very clear in the period from 2006 to 2010, with no significant drop in spending, but for the years from 2010 to 2020 it can be observe a slightly clearer pattern in that a decrease in the price level results in an increase in spending by international tourists in Panama.
