Abstract

Gentrification is a global phenomenon to characterize the replacement of one population by another, generally in the best areas of the city. In this comparative study between Panama City and Guadalajara, the authors propose to follow the different stages and actors articulated in this process: declaration as world heritage of humanity, real estate speculation (rent, sale), improvement of transportation and expulsion of popular sectors. towards the outskirts of the historic center, the arrival of upper strata in new higher buildings, submission of the authorities to the market, but also lived experience by the inhabitants, are some of the aspects exposed in this topical work.
