Abstract

This essay examines some of the social narratives that have emerged from the marginality present in the municipality of Cabimas, in the Western region of Venezuela. Beginning with the historic premise that infers marginalization in Cabimas came about as a consequence of the process of development which started with oil exploitation. The way in which the inhabitants of this municipality perceive of themselves as relegated is defined as a "confusing marginality", given the ways in which their exclusion arose in the midst of the wealth generated by oil extraction. For an interpretation of the popular imagination and local identity, social narratives such as traditional music (rebellious gaita) and oral testimony have been emphasised. Through these expressions a significant feature of the cabimense collective identity is highlighted: the demand, a feeling of resistance to the adverse conditions of the location.
