Abstract

Panamanian society at colonial times, as well in other places of the Spanish Empire, was divided according to the three main races coexisting: European, Indian and African descendants.  Although the last group were enslaved, at the end of the period, the existance of free persons among them shows us there was a social movement that has impacted Panama  identity formation of our nation, since they used to work in activities different from the one they were brought into our territories.  Consequently, the present paper looks out the comparison of previous investigations addressing the subject, so it could be understood the social develpment reffered to.
