For many decades, school dropouts have been a major problem in education. Even in the 21st century, it continues to be a concern because of the great impact it has on students due the fact that it reduces their opportunities to be a professional and to join a formal job market.
This situation may be due to several factors, which is why we decided to carry out this research with the title: Perception of high school teachers on social and cultural factors associated with school dropout, province of Panama, October 2020.
The general objective is to analyze the perception of high school teachers in the province of Panama regarding the social and cultural factors of school dropout.
The design of this research is quantitative, and the type of study is descriptive and transversal because it exposes the factors of school dropout. Transversal because the variables are studied and analyzed once in the year 2020.
The target group was teachers in the province of Panama, located in the North, Center and East of the province.
The results of the study show that among the social factors that affect school desertion are: bullying, drugs, early pregnancy, gangs and learning deficiencies (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, attention deficit disorder with motor immaturity, difficulty in using spoken and written language, slight mental retardation). Among the social factors are the type of family that, generally, the students who deserted, the didactic support of the parents towards the students, family disintegration and economic factors such as extreme poverty.
Concluding that social and cultural factors along with extreme poverty are determining factors for the student to drop out.
