Introduction: At present, it has been proven that many factors influencing the Social Adaptation of People with Ileostomy and Colostomy will vary based on each individual´s emotional intelligence and psychosocial support. Objective: to describe the adaptation to the social, effective, and efficient environment of people with ileostomy and colostomy in ambulatory conditions. Methodology: This is a descriptive, qualitative-quantitative study, from November 2018 to July 2019, on a closed focus group representing 20% of the total population of people with this ostomy. There was no age limitation; however, inclusion criteria required patients to have undergone surgery at the institution and had the ostomy for less than 1 year. A questionnaire based on the Likert scale was applied to evaluate numerically the level of adaptation, along with a pretest and posttest, after the intervention. Results: The study showed a change in self-care with the pretest and posttest, but not in the comparison between the pretest and posttest in the emotional realm and perception as a human being. Conclusion: The social adaptation to colostomy and ileostomy is linked to each patient as a person but not influenced by social status, academic level, or age; it is an individualized process that requires help from professionals who can provide tools to cope with their new lifestyle.
