Abstract

Introduction: In nursing, the soft skill “empathic listening”, enables an individualized emotional approach, enhancing the nurse-patient relationship. Methodology: the intervention project implemented a Psychoeducational Program for empathic listening approved by the Bioethics Committee at Universidad de Panama. A convenience sample of 6 recently appointed nurses was used. Results: A pre-and post-test was applied to assess the nurses´ ability to establish a feasible and favorable helping relationship, connect with patients´ emotional needs, and offer solutions to their concerns. 100% of the participants (n=6) encouraged patients to express their feelings and emotions and paid attention to verbal and non-verbal cues during the conversation. 83% of the sampling refrained from recriminating, questioning, or contradicting patients while 17% did not. The nurses involved in the program stated their commitment to reinforcing self-confidence, security, and self-esteem, to foster feasible coexistence in the helping relationship. Discussion: the tools offered to develop empathic listening skills, reinforce learning, cognitive modification, and effective communication techniques, to “know what to say, what to do”. In this intervention project, the nurses encouraged patients to express their feelings and emotions, to establish open communication, and to show genuine interest in the patient. Conclusion: the psychoeducational program promotes humanized emotional care, through a sensitive attitude in effective practice. It strengthens the nurse-patient connection, for a better development of the process in the quality of care.
