The International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG) are specific strategies designed to improve the safety of hospitalized patients. Objective: To determine the implementation of the 6 IPSG by the healthcare personnel working in the Hemodialysis Unit of Hospital Santo Tomás. Methodology: The study used a quantitative, descriptive, and evaluative approach aimed at measuring the degree of implementation of the 6 IPSG in the Hemodialysis Unit of Hospital Santo Tomás from May to June 2018. Results: Goal 1: Correct patient identification, verification and proper recording of patient information, reached 93.5% compliance. Goal 2: Improve effective communication, the nurse repeated verbal medical orders aloud and recorded them in the patient’s file in 63% of cases. Goal 3: Improve the safety of high-alert medications, proper storage reached 70.7%. Goal 4: Ensure safe surgery, correct patient, site, and procedure; 82.6% compliance was recorded for cleaning the puncture site with antiseptic solution. Goal 5: Reduce the risk of health care-associated infections, reached 95.7% compliance. Goal 6: Reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls, 96.7% of personnel offered assistance to patients with some degree of disability. Conclusion: Patient safety within healthcare facilities is essential; therefore, the personnel responsible for providing care must strictly adhere to IPSG standards.
