Abstract

Professional self-care in nursing is an essential component sustaining the care and the overall well-being of staff, especially in settings characterized by high emotional demands and care overload. The objective of this article was to analyze nursing interventions focused on professional self-care by identifying key elements reported in the scientific literature that contribute to physical, mental, and emotional well-being. A systematic literature review with a qualitative approach was conducted, using searches in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and BMC Nursing, and including studies published between 2022 and 2025 in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. The analysis was performed using content analysis and organizing the information into categories, subcategories, and codes. The findings were structured into five categories: work demands of nursing practice, professional self-care, nursing interventions, professional resilience, and professional well-being. The evidence showed that work overload, long shifts, and sustained stress limit self-care practice, while psychoeducational, psychological, and mindfulness-based interventions help reduce emotional burnout, strengthen resilience, and improve professional well-being. It is concluded that self-care should be addressed as an institutional and professional priority through sustained programs and organizational strategies that promote healthy work environments.
